About the Training

STAR’s CHW Training is accredited by the Maryland Department of Health. The program is administered by other Community Health Workers who are currently working with and in community.

The training consists of 100 hours of in person training that is completed within 4 weeks. The classes are interactive, engaging, and fun.  A 40-hour in person field practicum will be coordinated for each participant within STAR and with other community partners.

The curriculum focuses on the required nine core competencies:

  • Advocacy and community capacity building skills
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Cultural competency
  • Understanding of ethics and confidentiality issues
  • Knowledge of local resources and system navigation
  • Care coordination support skills
  • Teaching skills to promote healthy behavior change
  • Outreach methods and strategies
  • Understanding of public health concepts and health literacy
